Understanding Brachytherapy: A Targeted Approach to Cancer Treatment
Brachytherapy is a highly precise form of radiation therapy that delivers radiation directly to a tumor site, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Unlike traditional external beam radiation, which passes through the body to reach the tumor, brachytherapy places a radioactive source inside or very close to the cancerous tissue. This localized approach allows higher doses of radiation to be administered with reduced side effects, making it a preferred option for certain types of cancer.
The technique is widely used in treating cancers such as prostate, cervical, breast, and skin cancer. For prostate cancer, brachytherapy can be delivered as either permanent seed implants, which remain in the body, or temporary high-dose treatments that are removed after a few minutes or hours. Cervical cancer patients often receive brachytherapy in combination with external radiation, enhancing the effectiveness of the overall treatment plan.
